Founded in 1839 under the title St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, the congregation consisted of German Protestants of the East Liberty area. The church was located on what is now Sheridan Avenue. Reuniting after a brief schism, the congregation moved to Frankstown Road in 1844. A cemetery was purchased in 1844 and a parochial school was begun in 1858. In 1865, the congregation moved to its present location at Collins and Station Streets.
